How to Report Gambling Winnings on TurboTax (2026)
Quick answer: In TurboTax, go to Federal → Wages & Income → Less Common Income → Gambling Winnings. Enter each DraftKings/FanDuel W-2G individually, add DFS or promo 1099-MISC amounts under "winnings not reported on a W-2G," and record total losses on the follow-up screen. Losses are deductible on Schedule A up to 90% of winnings under the 2026 One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Educational overview, not tax advice. TurboTax menu labels may vary slightly by tax year and product tier — the underlying IRS treatment is the same.
Before you start: gather these
- Every W-2G from DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, and any other sportsbook or casino you used.
- Any 1099-MISC for DFS or promotional credits (issued at $600+ per operator, per year).
- Your session ledger — total winning sessions and total losing sessions for the year.
- State-specific withholding totals if you played in multiple states.
Session ledger, not deposit totals. The IRS expects gross winnings and gross losses tracked per session — not the net swing on your bank account. NetBetTracker builds this automatically from your DraftKings/FanDuel CSVs.
Step 1 — Find the gambling section in TurboTax
In TurboTax Online (Deluxe or higher — Free Edition does not include Schedule A), navigate:
Federal → Wages & Income → scroll to Less Common Income → Gambling Winnings → Start
TurboTax Desktop uses the same path from the Personal Income tab.
Step 2 — Enter each W-2G box-for-box
When TurboTax asks "Did you win money or prizes from gambling in 2026?", choose Yes. On the next screen, select Yes, I received a W-2G. Add one entry per W-2G — do not combine forms from the same operator.
| W-2G box | TurboTax field | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Payer name / TIN | Payer info | Copy exactly from the PDF — DK & FD use different legal entities. |
| Box 1 — Reportable winnings | Gross winnings | This is the taxable amount for that form. |
| Box 4 — Federal tax withheld | Federal withholding | Credits against total federal tax owed. |
| Boxes 14–17 — State info | State withholding | Feeds the state return. Skip only if all fields are blank. |
Step 3 — Enter 1099-MISC and any cash winnings without a form
After the last W-2G, TurboTax asks whether you had winnings not reported on a W-2G. Choose Yes and enter:
- DFS 1099-MISC (Box 3) totals from DraftKings and FanDuel — one line each.
- Promotional / referral 1099-MISC amounts, if listed separately from DFS.
- Cash and other winnings below the W-2G threshold — the IRS still treats them as taxable income from dollar one.
Do not double-count. If a bonus is already inside your DFS 1099-MISC Box 3 total, don't also add it as a separate cash winning. Match TurboTax's total to your ledger before continuing.
Step 4 — Add losses on the "Gambling Losses" screen
TurboTax then asks for total gambling losses. Enter your full loss figure from the session ledger — TurboTax handles the cap. Under the 2026 rules, deductible losses are limited to 90% of winnings, and only if you itemize on Schedule A. TurboTax compares itemized vs. standard deduction automatically and picks the higher one.
Keep the ledger, W-2Gs, and sportsbook CSV exports for at least three years — losses without documentation are the #1 reason gambling deductions are disallowed on audit.
Step 5 — Reconcile the summary before filing
Before hitting file, open the TurboTax gambling summary and confirm:
- W-2G count matches the number of PDFs you downloaded.
- Gross winnings equal Schedule 1, Line 8b on the preview 1040.
- Loss deduction is at or below 90% of winnings — and only appears if Schedule A is used.
- Federal & state withholding line up with the W-2G totals.
Give TurboTax the exact numbers it needs
NetBetTracker turns your DraftKings and FanDuel CSVs into a session ledger and W-2G cross-check report — so the totals you type into TurboTax match what the IRS already has on file.
