W-2G thresholds 2026: $2,000 slots & bingo, $1,500 keno, $5,000 poker, $600 at 300x
A casino or sportsbook must issue Form W-2G once a payout crosses the threshold for that game type. The thresholds differ by game, some are measured gross and some net of your wager, and 24% federal withholding follows a separate rule. Here is every 2026 limit in one place, plus a checker for your own win.

W-2G expected ($2,000 slot/bingo threshold met)
The payout is measured gross, so your wager isn't subtracted. Withholding usually applies only if you don't provide a TIN.
Estimates only. Operators apply their own procedures and state withholding may also apply.
2026 W-2G threshold table
| Game type | Threshold | How it's measured | Withholding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slot machines & bingo | $2,000 | Gross payout of $2,000 or more on a single play, not reduced by the wager. Raised from $1,200 effective January 1, 2026 and indexed for inflation after 2026. | No automatic withholding unless you don't provide a TIN (then 24% backup withholding). |
| Keno | $1,500 | Winnings of $1,500 or more, reduced by the amount wagered on that game. | Backup withholding of 24% only if no TIN is provided. |
| Poker tournaments | $5,000 | Net winnings above $5,000 after subtracting the buy-in and entry fee. | 24% withheld if no TIN is provided; otherwise reported without withholding. |
| Sportsbook, horse racing, DFS & other wagers | $600 at 300x | Payout of $600 or more AND at least 300 times the wager. | 24% withheld automatically when the payout exceeds $5,000 and is 300x the wager. |
| Lottery, sweepstakes & wagering pools | $600 at 300x | Proceeds of $600 or more and at least 300 times the ticket price. | 24% federal withholding on proceeds over $5,000. |
| Table games (blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat) | No W-2G | Casinos generally do not issue a W-2G for table game wins, regardless of size. | None — but the income is still fully taxable and must be reported. |
Gross vs net: the detail most people miss
Slots and bingo are measured on the gross payout, so a $2,000 hit off a $5 spin is reportable even though your profit was $1,195. Keno and poker tournaments are measured after subtracting what you put in. Sportsbook, lottery, and pool wagers use a two-part test: the payout must be at least $600 and at least 300 times the stake, which is why a $1,200 straight bet at -110 rarely produces a form while a $700 longshot parlay off a $2 stake does.
None of this changes what you owe. Receiving no W-2G is not the same as owing no tax — the reporting threshold only determines whether the IRS gets a copy.
Match every W-2G to your own records
W-2G forms arrive in late January and rarely match what you think you won. NetBetTracker keeps a private ledger of every session — date, stake, result, and venue — so you can reconcile the forms, support your loss deduction, and file without guesswork.

What is the W-2G threshold for slot machines in 2026?
$2,000. Effective January 1, 2026 the slot machine and bingo reporting threshold rose from $1,200 to $2,000, and the figure is indexed for inflation in later years. The amount is measured gross — the casino does not subtract the amount you wagered on that spin.
Do I owe tax on gambling winnings below the W-2G threshold?
Yes. Every dollar of gambling winnings is taxable income whether or not you receive a Form W-2G. The threshold only controls when the payer must report the win to the IRS, not when the income becomes taxable.
When is 24% withheld from my winnings?
Regular gambling withholding of 24% applies when proceeds from a wager exceed $5,000 and the payout is at least 300 times the wager — typical for lotteries, sportsbooks, and wagering pools. Backup withholding of 24% also applies to any reportable win if you don't give the payer a taxpayer identification number.
Why did my sportsbook send a 1099-MISC instead of a W-2G?
Some operators treat promotional credits, referral bonuses, and certain DFS or prediction-market payouts as other income rather than wagering proceeds, which is reported on Form 1099-MISC or 1099-K instead. The tax is still owed either way — see our 1099 vs W-2G guide.
Does a W-2G mean the tax is already paid?
Not usually. Many W-2G forms carry $0 in box 4 (federal income tax withheld). Even when 24% is withheld, that rate can be well below your marginal rate, so you may owe more at filing.
Can I subtract my losses from the W-2G amount?
You cannot net losses against the W-2G figure on the form itself. Losses are deducted separately as an itemized deduction, capped at your winnings, and for 2026 only 90% of losses are deductible under the new limit. A session log is what supports the deduction.
What happens if I never receive my W-2G?
You still must report the income. Request a copy from the operator's tax documents page, or reconstruct the amount from your own session records and account statements, then report it on Schedule 1 as other income.
